Upstream Posts We Translate¶
Part of what this community does is translate release notes and announcements from the projects we advocate for into Traditional and Simplified Chinese, so readers who do not work in English can follow what is happening in the tools they depend on. Around eighteen such posts sit on the Chinese editions of this site and are deliberately absent here.
The reason is straightforward. Those posts were written in English by the projects themselves. Translating them back into English would produce a worse version of something that already exists, published later, and would put a second-hand copy between you and the project's own words. Where the original is authoritative, we link to it.
Where to read them¶
- OONI blog: measurement methodology, Explorer features, Probe releases, the annual Open Measurement Gathering, and the anonymous credential system. This is also where OONI publishes its censorship research reports
- Tor Project blog: Arti releases, censorship circumvention work, network health, organizational announcements, and the annual State of the Onion. Regional censorship investigations appear here too
- Tails news: releases, security advisories, and the ongoing integration with the Tor Project
- Signal blog: protocol changes, including post-quantum key exchange and key verification work
What the English edition does carry¶
Original writing rather than translation:
- Regional observation and analysis: measurement work, regulatory tracking, and what we see from inside the Sinophone Asia-Pacific. The Regional Observatory collects it
- Community reporting: what happened at an event, how a deployment went, what a piece of upstream work took. The Updates section has these
- Curated reports: external research worth reading in full, indexed with links to the originals alongside our Chinese translations, in Reports

Translations are done by volunteers, and helping is welcome. The process is in localization and translation, and the terminology standard is the contributor handbook.
