Take part

You can join at any time, and you don't need a technical background to start.

The community behind anoni.net is small, volunteer-run and built around self-hosted infrastructure. Documented partners are the Tor Project, OONI, EFF and our university hosts in Taiwan, and we are open to working with more peer organizations, researchers, journalists and individual contributors. If you are evaluating us before a collaboration, the About page covers governance, partnerships and how to verify what we do.

What we welcome

  • Researchers and academics studying networked freedom, surveillance, censorship or platform regulation in the Asia-Pacific. We can share Pulse and ASN coverage data, talk through observations, and where useful be cited in published work.
  • Journalists covering regional Internet-freedom stories. We can share what we observe and, where we know the local terrain, point you to people closer to the story.
  • Peer organizations in rights advocacy, anti-surveillance and anti-censorship who want Asia-Pacific partners, or want to translate or co-publish material for a Sinophone audience.
  • Region-specific contributors who can sharpen the country-by-country coverage from inside their own jurisdiction. We particularly welcome voices from Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia and the mainland Chinese diaspora.
  • Translators bridging regional reports between Chinese and English, especially long-form research that doesn't yet exist in either language.

Joining the discussion

Most ongoing work happens on our own Matrix homeserver, im.anoni.net. Start with the community's public Space, which gathers the relevant rooms in one place, and say which topic interests you in its room.

Accounts on im.anoni.net are approved individually. Email whisper@anoni.net with a brief introduction and what you would like to discuss, and we will reply with onboarding instructions. An existing matrix.org account works too, since Matrix federates across servers.

The 2026 tracks

The background is in Continuing from 2025 into 2026, and the quarterly deliverables are on the 2026 roadmap.

Day to day

  • Discussion happens in Matrix rooms, one per topic as needed.
  • Shared documents are written in CryptPad, including event notes and anything sensitive.
  • Video calls use Jitsi, with links posted in the relevant Matrix room.

Accounts and entry points for these tools are on the services page.
